Kimberly Shao, MD, FAAD
Dr. Kimberly Shao, MD, FAAD, is a double board-certified dermatologist. She serves as Sora Dermatology's Mohs surgeon and lab director as well as a general and cosmetic dermatologist.
Dr. Shao went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania where she did an additional research year in Mohs micrographic surgery. She then completed her internship in Denver, Colorado. Afterwards, she trained for 3 years at the University of Connecticut in general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, cosmetic procedures and dermatologic surgery. She has been mentored by leaders in dermoscopy to recognize skin cancers during full body skin examinations and biologic medications to treat conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
With a strong surgical interest, Dr. Shao further completed an ACGME-accredited Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship with Dr. Heidi Donnelly. Together they are developing an app to streamline decision making regarding repair options following skin cancer removal. Additionally, she is working to improve access to Mohs surgery for underserved, uninsured skin cancer patients through an organization called iTASC.
Dr. Shao has published multiple research articles in dermatology’s top journals. She has presented both nationally and internationally at dermatology conferences. Online, Dr. Shao is passionate about patient education and dispelling skincare myths. She is a prominent public figure on social media dedicated to educating the public on science-based skincare recommendations. Additionally, Dr. Shao volunteers her time mentoring students who are interested in applying to medical school/dermatology residency.
Dr. Shao strongly believes that her job as a physician and surgeon is to breakdown the science and review all the treatment options so that patients and their loved ones can make truly informed decisions. She understands every patient will have different goals, questions, and concerns. Ultimately, it is a team effort to curate the best treatment plan for each patient!
When she is not taking care of patients, you can find her hiking, skiing, at yoga, or getting ice cream with her husband Lawrence. Dr. Shao is excited to serve the patients of Sora Dermatology with all their skincare needs!
